I really loved this scene, so I tried to do a painting of it
nah but think about it
all this hand-wringing about age differences between the characters, but the doctor doesn’t even think she’s young
Yeah, the “I’m not your boyfriend” thing from Ep 1 was pretty clearly about the Doctor’s own self-loathing though, he’s under the impression that he deluded himself into thinking he can have the kind of happiness humans have, and that he needed to let that go.
Actually, I would say that the Doctor is projecting pretty strongly, here. He tells Clara “I’d say you’re in love, but you’re not a young woman anymore.” What this means is the Doctor thinks of love as for the young and naive - this is more of the Twelfth Doctor’s cynicism showing through. This is the Doctor’s reasoning behind his decision to back out of a romantic relationship with Clara; he got and older-looking regeneration and was starkly reminded that he’s not young and carefree, he’s ancient and responsible for many bad things, made many mistakes, and love is not a realistic pursuit anymore - especially with nice human women like Clara who would die so quickly (or who’s deaths he could become inadvertently responsible for). This moment is more than just a humorous moment, it’s a pretty clear indication of just where Twelve is mentally when it comes to his own negative perception of himself and the world. Twelve is a VERY cynical character.
Not only that, but we’re seeing a lot of Clara knocking sense into him when he hits that low edge of that cynicism/negativity, like in this episode and his need to be right about the Daleks being pure evil.
